Sint Willibrordus is a small village in the dry hills of western Curaçao, about half an hour's drive from Willemstad. Locals rebranded it "Williwood" with a Hollywood-style sign on the hillside, and the name stuck. It's not a place to stay long, but it sits at a crossroads of some of the island's best stops.
The church and the village
The neo-Gothic Sint Willibrordus church, built between 1884 and 1888, stands on a rise and is visible from far across the flat landscape. It is still a working parish, so it's often closed outside service times; the exterior and the setting are the reason to stop. Nearby, the old salt pans of the Saliña Sint Marie stretch towards Bullen Bay.
Flamingos at Jan Kok
Just below the village, the shallow Jan Kok salt pans are the most reliable place on Curaçao to see wild flamingos, often close enough to photograph from the roadside. Pull fully off the road, keep your voice down and don't walk out onto the flats. Overlooking them, plantation houses like Landhuis Jan Kok recall a harsher past: the estate produced salt with enslaved labour. It now houses an art gallery; opening times vary, so check before you go.
Beaches nearby
- Daaibooi: a small public cove between cliffs, with calm water and a snack bar. Free entry.
- Porto Mari: a wide beach with a double reef, good for snorkelling; entry fee and facilities.
- Cas Abao: white sand, turquoise water, loungers and a restaurant; entry fee.
Most visitors come here by car on a day out west; compare rental cars. No car? Many island tours stop at the flamingos and one of these beaches: see west-side tours. Accommodation nearby is mainly resort apartments and villas around Porto Mari and Coral Estate: check what's available.
Continue west to Lagun and Banda Abou or north to Westpunt.
A loop for the day
A good route from Willemstad: drive out early to the flamingos, snorkel at Porto Mari or Daaibooi in the morning, have lunch at a beach restaurant, and spend the afternoon at Cas Abao. On the way back, the road towards Willemstad passes through the hills with views over Bullen Bay. There are few shops in the village itself, so bring water and snacks. Watch out for goats on the road, especially at dusk, and keep your car locked with nothing visible inside at beach car parks.
