Curaçao is small enough that you can see the whole island from one base, but where you sleep still shapes your holiday. Do you want to walk to dinner? Swim before breakfast? Hear nothing but birds at night? Most visitors stay somewhere between Willemstad and Jan Thiel, on the southeast side of the island, where most restaurants, beach clubs and dive schools are. The far west is quieter and more rugged.

Whatever you choose, you will probably want a rental car to reach the western beaches. Curaçao International Airport (CUR) at Hato lies north of Willemstad, so most of these areas are a short drive from your plane, and the far west is the only one that really feels remote on arrival day. Here is how the main areas compare.

Area by area

Willemstad: Punda and Otrobanda

Staying in Willemstad puts the UNESCO-listed historic centre, the floating bridge and the harbour on your doorstep. It is a great choice for a first few nights, especially if you pick up a car later. Evenings in Punda can be quiet once the shops close; Otrobanda has more hotels and a few lively squares.

Pietermaai and Scharloo

Pietermaai is the island's most atmospheric neighbourhood: restored merchant houses turned into boutique hotels, cocktail bars and some of the best restaurants on the island, with small swimming platforms on the sea. Scharloo, across the Waaigat, is calmer, with colourful mansions and street art.

Mambo Beach and the Seaquarium area

Ten minutes from the city, the Mambo Beach area is where you will find sunbeds, beach bars, a shopping boulevard and nightlife. It is convenient and sociable, and fine for families who want everything close by.

Jan Thiel and Spanish Water

Jan Thiel and Spanish Water are popular with Dutch families and long-stay visitors: holiday parks, apartments and plenty of private villas, a lively beach with restaurants, supermarkets nearby and the large, sheltered bay of Spanish Water for kayaking and sailing. Boats to Klein Curaçao leave from close by.

Blue Bay and Sint Michiel

West of the city, Blue Bay and Sint Michiel combine a large managed beach, a golf course and gated villa estates with a former fishing village where locals still go for a swim. Quieter than Jan Thiel, and handy for both Willemstad and the west.

Westpunt and Lagun

For nature, diving and dark skies, stay in Westpunt or around Lagun. Choose from small resorts, dive lodges and cottages near Playa Kenepa, Piskado and Christoffel Park. You'll trade nightlife for sunsets, and it is wise to stock up on groceries before you drive out, as shops are few.

Hotel, apartment or villa?

Hotels and resorts are easiest for short stays and come with a pool, a beach or a breakfast. Apartments in holiday parks are popular around Jan Thiel. For families and groups, a private villa often gives the most space and privacy, with a kitchen and a pool of your own.
