Westpunt is the village at the far northwestern tip of Curaçao, roughly an hour's drive from Willemstad. It packs a lot into a few kilometres: some of the island's most loved beaches, its highest mountain and the wild north coast, plus sunsets over the open sea.

Beaches and turtles

  • Playa Forti: a small beach below a cliff-top restaurant, famous for cliff jumping. Only jump where locals do and check the water first.
  • Playa Piskado (Grandi): fishermen clean their catch at the pier and green turtles gather close by. Snorkel calmly, never touch or feed them, and keep clear of the boats.
  • Playa Kalki: a small cove and a popular dive site.
  • Kenepa: just south, on the way to Lagun.

Christoffel Park and Shete Boka

Inland, Christoffel Park protects the slopes of the Christoffelberg, at 372 metres the island's highest point. The summit trail is steep at the end, with a short scramble, and is best started as early as the park allows; check current opening and last-entry times, as the summit route closes to new hikers in the late morning heat. There are also driving routes and easier walks for spotting deer, birds and orchids.

On the windswept north coast, Shete Boka National Park is a series of inlets where waves crash into limestone caves, most dramatically at Boka Tabla. It's a quick, worthwhile stop on the way to or from Westpunt. Not driving? See Christoffel and west-side tours.

Tip: Hike Christoffel at opening time, cool off at Playa Grandi with the turtles, and end with sunset at Playa Forti.

Staying in Westpunt

Accommodation is small-scale: dive resorts, cottages and apartments, many with sea views and a quiet, rural feel. It's perfect if you love nature and don't mind driving to Willemstad for a city night: compare Westpunt stays. A car is essential; compare rental cars and fill up before heading west.

The north coast

The windward side around Westpunt is a different world from the calm leeward coves: waves pound limestone terraces and the spray can be dramatic. At Watamula, a natural hole in the rock "breathes" with the swell. These spots are for looking only; currents and waves make swimming dangerous, and the rock is sharp. Wear sturdy shoes, keep children close and stay well back from the edge when the sea is rough. Later in the day, return to the sheltered west side for a swim and sunset.
