Christoffel National Park covers a large swathe of the island's wild north-west, around the Christoffelberg, at 372 metres the highest point on Curaçao. It became a national park in 1978 and takes in three former plantations, old mining sites and some of the most varied dry forest on the island. Entry is at Landhuis Savonet, on the road to Westpunt, about 45 minutes' drive from Willemstad.
Climbing the Christoffelberg
The summit hike is the reason most people come. It is short but steep, and the last stretch is a scramble over rocks using your hands. From the foot of the mountain allow about two hours up and down; from the visitor centre, about three. The view takes in most of the island and, on clear days, the outline of Aruba and Bonaire.
- Hours: the park opens at 6:00. The ticket desk closes early in the afternoon, and you are not allowed to start the climb after 10:00 because of the heat.
- Bring: at least two litres of water per person, a hat, sunscreen and proper shoes.
- Fitness: fine for active hikers; not for young children or anyone uneasy on steep rock.
Without the summit
There are several easier trails, such as walks to plantation ruins, plus scenic drives on dirt roads. Look out for the small Curaçao white-tailed deer, orchids, barn owls and plenty of iguanas. The Savonet Museum at the entrance tells the story of the plantation and the people who lived and worked here.
Guided hikes and jeep safaris can be booked with the park or via GetYourGuide. Combine your visit with Shete Boka next door and a swim at Playa Kenepa afterwards. You will need a car for this corner of the island: compare prices on DiscoverCars, and see where to sleep nearby in our Westpunt guide.
